CHAPTER THREE

LIBBY

After four days on sick leave, I longed to be back to work. I hated rattling around in my apartment all day (still no hot water in the taps), alone with my thoughts. I watched so much Netflix I was sure the next message to pop up on my screen would be, Are you still watching? Why don’t you go outside and get some sun?

A few of my friends from the office popped in, but the visits were uncomfortable. They eyed me warily, as if “what I had” was contagious. I didn’t hold it against them; I guess anyone would be rattled after seeing their coworker expire—if only for a few moments—on the cold hard floor.

I got daily, sobbing apologies from Cheryl, so much so that I found myself trying to comfort her. When Spencer told me he was going to fire her for her mistake, I pleaded for her job. She was new, she was young, and hopefully she wouldn’t kill anyone else in the office.

And Andres called. Sometimes it was a quick hello between call-outs; sometimes it was after his shift, when he would have enough time to chat. Waiting for his call left me on edge; I threw surreptitious glances at the phone every three seconds, pretending to myself that I wasn’t. Then, on Thursday night, he asked me what I was doing Friday.

“I dunno,” I said, “I have so many suitors I’ll have to create a shortlist. Maybe insist that they approach me with a tribute before I grant them an audience.”

“And what do you consider an appropriate tribute?”

“Anything that’s 100% nut-free,” I said, and for the first time, I was able to laugh at my misfortune.

He chuckled on the other end of the line. “Well, if I turn up with an offering befitting your status, will you let me take you out, Your Majesty?”

My heart kicked into double time. “Her Majesty is willing to consider it.”
